The information on this site is based on two trips to Vietnam, first in November of 2002, and then in April of 2006. On our first trip to Vietnam in 2002 we started out in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), traveled north to Dalat, and then up the coast on Highway 1, stopping for several days in Quy Nhon, Hoi An, and Hue. From Hue we took an overnight train to Hanoi, and eventually went northwest to Lao Cai, Sapa, Bac Ha, and Can Cau. We also made day trips to Halong Bay and the Perfume Pagoda from Hanoi.
In 2006 we decided to spend most of our time in the Central Highlands and on part of the old Ho Chi Minh Trail, now the recently paved Highway 14. During this trip we again started out from Saigon, and then spent time in and around Dalat, Buon Ma Thuot, Kon Tum, Phuoc Son, Aluoi, and Lao Bao, before crossing the border into Laos by foot.
Before both trips, we found it difficult to find information on areas less traveled to, such as the northwest of Vietnam including Bac Ha and Can Cau, and towns located in the Central Highlands on Highway 14, such as Phuoc Son and Aluoi. These areas, which see very little tourism, are often the most rewarding places to travel to. The people are extremely friendly, and very excited to meet foreigners.
